Early details make a quality tree

Like the slow slight turns of a ship’s rudder, the early care of a tree can literally determine its future direction. Every detail matters for the production of a quality tree.

“The first detail is using the best liners we can find,” said David Broussard, owner of Bayou Garden Growers. “We want healthy plants that haven’t been stressed. These aren’t plants on sale at the back of the garden center in mid-summer.”

At the farm, Broussard bends to pick up an empty three-gallon pot. “Here’s another detail,” he said. “We use plants grown in RootMaker pots., and the way these are designed, roots don’t circle the pot but create a denser root system.” These injected molded pots have distinct tiers and holes at each tiered level. When a root reaches one of the holes, it naturally dehydrates and dies back or air prunes. When that root stops it causes new roots to develop.

Another key is to ensure that the tree is planted correctly and staked if necessary. “You don’t want to stake if you don’t have to,” Broussard said. “If you need to keep it from blowing over or help it in developing a central leader, staking is an option. One downside to staking is that it keeps a tree from developing a lateral root system that comes naturally as it sways.”

Broussard points out these early details are important whether on a commercial tree farm or in a residential back yard. “Investing a little time at the beginning will make a big difference in the future of your plants,” he said.
